More 'Idol' Auditions: Uncensored!

More 'Idol' Auditions: Uncensored!

January 15, 2003

Paula Abdul

There was the girl who threatened to make judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson audition for her. And the guy who almost pulled a Full Monty.

But those aren't all...

For the past three months, "American Idol"'s iron-willed trio, PAULA ABDUL, Simon and Randy, have been hard at work auditioning the 50,000 Kelly Clarkson wannabes --and tone-deaf hopefuls -- all itching to be the new American Idol.

Tonight on ET, we take you inside the screenings to find out which of the 16- to 24-year-olds got the green-light to go to Hollywood for the final cut -- and which others crashed and burned!

"We've scoured the nation loooking for the next Kelly Clarkson," Paula told our BOB GOEN. "You won't believe what Simon, Randy and I have had to listen to. Not everyone was cut out to be a star!"

As expected, Sinister Simon was in fine form, telling several competitors:

-- "All I could think of while you were performing is how I would pay you to stop."

-- "That was excruciating. I think all the preparation in the world wouldn't really help you because you have a terrible voice."

-- And finally, to one nervous, note-carrying flunkie: "No. 1, you can't sing. No. 2, you can't remember the song. And No. 3, you can't read your own handwriting!"

FOX is kicking off season two of its smash talent search hit on Jan. 21 with a 90-minute special, followed by a second show airing the following night. RYAN SEACREST will be back to host this time, joined by correspondent KRISTIN HOLT, whom you might recall as a finalist on the first "American Idol."

Auditions have been held in Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Nashville, Miami, New York and Los Angeles. In the Big Apple, the eager auditonees braved freezing temps and camped out on the sidewalk in a virtual tent city.

Among them was Long Islander CHRIS BOEHM, who optimistically told us: "I actually wanna meet Simon and shake his hand."
