1989 News

February 11th, 1989- "Straight Up" tops the US chart, as her debut album "Forever Your Girl," with songs written by Elliot Wolff and Jerry Leiber's son Oliver, begin its US chart climb.

March 29th- "Straight Up" is certified platinum by the RIAA.

April 8th- "Straight Up" hits UK #3.

April 19th- Paula Abdul participates in the "Prince's Trust Rock Gala" at the London Palladium with Erasure, Debbie Gibson, T'Pau, and Wet Wet Wet among others.

May 20th- Album title cut, "Forever Your Girl" tops the US survey.

May 24th- "Forever Your Girl" is certified gold by the RIAA.

June- Paula Abdul embarks on the 40-city "Club MTV Live" tour with Tonë Loc, Was (Not Was) Milli Vanilli and Information Society.

June 17th- "Forever Your Girl" reaches UK #24

August 26th- "Knocked Out" makes UK #45

August 30th- Still rising on the US survey, "Cold Hearted" is certified gold by the RIAA.

September 2nd- "Cold Hearted" tops the US chart, her third consecutive #1.

September 6th- Abdul wins "Best Dance," "Best Female Video," "Best Editing," and "Best Choreography" categories for "Straight Up" at the sixth annual MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, at the Universal Amphitheatre, where she is also a performing highlight of the show.

September 17th- Paula wins "Best Choreography" for Fox-TV's "Tracey Ullman Show" at the 41st annual Emmy Awards.

October 7th- "Forever Your Girl," after over 14 months on the survey, hits US #1, where it will stay for ten weeks, becoming Virgin America's biggest- selling album to date.

December 2nd- Reissued "(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me" now hits US #3 and peaks at UK #74.

December 17th- Abdul participates in "America Has Heart" benefit at the Universal Amphitheatre, to raise money for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, depleted by Hurricane Hugo and the San Francisco earthquake.

December 23rd- Abdul wins "Top Pop Album Artist, Female" in Billboard's "The Year In Music," one of three #1 feats in this year's round-up.
