American Idol: The Search for a Superstar's contestants hope to parlay their TV appearances into recording careers, but will it do the same for judge Paula Abdul?

Ouch!!

That's what one reporter bravely wanted to know at a press conference for the hit show at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena,
Calif., on Monday (July 22), asking if she'd use the series' success to jump-start her career. Abdul -- a bit  annoyed by the question, but polite nonetheless -- reminded that she's "busy writing songs for other artists.
I wrote a number one record for Kylie  Minogue. I am recording. I have been recording. I'm going to continue to do that as well as other things."

Put on the spot several times during the Q&A session with fellow judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and the eight remaining contestants, she and Cowell traded barbs.

Responding to a question about her chances if she were an Idol hopeful, she hedged,  stressing the difficulty of the competition and seizing the opportunity to zing Cowell. "If Simon had to get up on that mark and be critiqued by himself," she said, "he'd kick his own ass."

American Idol: The Search  for a Superstar airs on Fox on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
